Transportation
Athens is the capital city of Greece. It is
a huge sprawling city with many districts. Athens is considered the birthplace
of Western Society.
Athens has a good public transport system. One ticket allows you to travel by
Metro, Suburban Train, Trams, Trolleys, and buses, with unlimited transfers
anywhere within Athens, for 90 minutes, 24 hours, or 3 days, depending on which
type of ticket you buy.
The new Athens Metro System has recently been upgraded, and is now a modern,
well-organized modality. There are three lines going to three different
districts.
The Suburban Railway runs from Piraeus to the Airport. Greece does not have an
extensive railway network.
The Athens Tram is also new, and connects the city with the southern suburbs,
and has connections with the Metro System.
Athens main Public transportation is a network of different buses and trolleys
operated by the Urban transport Organization. The buses go pretty much
everywhere.
Taxis are available and inexpensive, but beware. Taxi Fraud is not rare.
Riding a bicycle in Athens is very similar to trying to ride in Houston, Tx. It
is not advisable unless you have a death-wish. Traffic is very heavy, and
drivers are extremely aggressive. There are few facilities for bicycles.
