Overview
The northernmost city on the planet with a population of more than 10,000, Alta is located in Norway’s Finnmark County, towards the very north of the country. It’s set in a region with wonderful natural scenery – the Altaosen river outlet is widely known as an important resting point for a wide variety of wetland bird species. Meanwhile there’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the area, featuring the town’s famous rock carvings, which are preserved as an open air museum and date back more than 6,000 years.
